Ethan's and Ehlana's Journals - August 31, 2018

Ethan:

The last day of August, and the start of our holiday weekend, has been an adventure – and a very long day.

Mom still had work to do to get ready for the weekend, but could do the supply and grocery shopping more-quickly without Ehlana and me around; so we were set free to go and play for the day after breakfast.  We met up with Naomi and Aiden to do that; spent a lot of time biking the trails at the park and around town; and had a picnic lunch at the park too.  Swimming, ice cream breaks, and some playground hang-out time with other friends kept us busy all day; and then we were home in time for dinner and to help out as family began arriving for the weekend.

We have the Rice clan with us – without Chris and Martin, since they’re away at college already and too-far away to come home for a weekend; and Jayden will be hanging out with me too – though we’ll see if that’s here or not each night.  While some of us needed to be home all evening, the first game of the high school football season was tonight, and since our team is defending champions – for the small school division; we had the home game against Grand Summit.  Unfortunately for us, we don’t have Michael and Tim on the team anymore; the Grand Summit players and fans have not been happy with our recent successes; and they took it out on us tonight on the way to a decisive win that wasn’t very sportsmanlike – or at least not in a good way.

After watching a lot of that game, it was great to be home to welcome Cassie, Michael, and Mandy; we had fun with everything from helping them with unloading their car and hauling luggage around to them getting to see the remodeled third floor and the long bedtime chat we had with everyone in the living room.  That last blast of fun lasted for more than an hour; Michael went home with his parents after that; and the rest of us came up to our beds.

Jayden is already sleeping as I write this; I need to get some sleep now; and that’s all of the news I have for today.  Expect a whole lot more over the next few days; since we have a very busy weekend ahead of us; and I hope that the start for September will be even better than August just ended for us!

Ethan – out!

Ehlana:

I have Mandy for my bedtime cuddle buddy tonight, and while I’ll pretend that she chose to stay in my room because she’s missed me; it’s really because of the fuzzy accent blanket on my bed that she’s really loving the most right now!

I see that Ethan’s already covered the highlights from our play day with our friends, so I won’t twin-up on that; and will only add that I’m glad that we got to play with some friends that we won’t likely get to hang out with much again before we go back to school on Tuesday while we’re all busy with our own families.  That won’t be true for Naomi and Aiden, since three of their parents will be busy with work for two out of three days this weekend, and we will see our other friends around; but I’m also sure that we’ll spend as much time as we can with Cassie, Michael, and our families while we can.

Ethan covered Cassie’s homecoming too, but I can add that she loves the redecorating for my new room; and she’s happy with her new room too – though she won’t actually get to use it very much over the next five years.  That might sound wrong to some readers looking at this journal in the future – but only if you haven’t read about her college plans for earning her doctoral degree in five years.  She will not get four and a half months off from college a year like most students – including study weeks.  She’ll be going to college for the summer sessions full-time too.  I don’t want to think about that tonight; and just be glad that Cassie is home for a few days.

We’ve stayed up too-late, though, and have a busy day booked for Saturday, so I need to wrap this up; and get some sleep.  We really have had a great last day of August; and I’ll hope that the First of September will be even better – starting with a couple of baseball championships for Ethan and me in the morning!

This is Ehlana Proctor; coming to you live from what is now my past!
