Cassie's Journal - October 30, 2017

I have a very busy Halloween ahead of me, and don’t have much time left for napping, so instead of short-changing this report; I’ll just save it up and do a double-update tomorrow – whether that’s Halloween-scary or not for any of you reading this in the future! ;^)

For me, that will hopefully be a spook-tacularly fun day from now even if it will just be a flip of the digital page for you; so, until next time...

Cassie's Journal - October 29, 2017

Happy 6th Birthday, Aiden!

Yes, they’re only six, but I’m sure that Aiden enjoyed his birthday wake-up call from Ehlana as much as Ethan liked having Naomi wake him up for Tai Chi! :^)

Aiden’s birthday was the main reason for why we had lots of parents with us for a pot-luck breakfast – including Michael’s parents.  We needed to split up and have groups in the dining room and sunroom; and Aiden’s special breakfast was in the dining room while Michael, Tim, Rowen, and I took care of getting the younger kids fed.  That made for a crazy-busy morning; we had to rush around to get to church on time; and then it almost seemed as though we got a break from the busy while we were at the service and in Sunday school.

Michael had to work the full shift today, but I only worked the buffet-to-close half of the day; and spent my afternoon helping out with Aiden’s birthday party.  That was at his house, but we also went for a bike ride around town on the trails; had some play time at the park; and I headed for work while Aiden’s party rolled on until they came to the Inn for the late buffet.  His party meant that I didn’t help out with the SAT studying today, but there’s a good chance that I’ll miss all of Aiden’s next five birthdays; so I wanted to be part of this one.

I got to be part of his birthday dinner because I helped with serving their gang of diners; but then he only had Ethan go home with him for a sleepover to wrap up his special day.  My work wasn’t even close to that much fun; and that includes not being able to have a sleepover with Michael thanks to the need to study and work on the family business.  Aiden’s birthday buffet was part of the reason for why we didn’t get home until closer to eleven than ten.  Michael and I still needed to get our homework done; so he came home with me; we did that while in a time phase; and then he went home while I came up to bed and really got to work.  More time phasing was involved for that; so I’ve had another one of those triple-shift sorts of days – and really need to crash now.

I may only have time for a nap now, but will manage to stay fired up over the next couple of days as we wind down the month with a lot of Halloween fun.  That’s something I can write about with the next two or three reports, though, and I really do want to crash and nap now; so, until next time...

Cassie's Journal - October 28, 2017

We had a frosty morning around here, so I was glad to be at the Inn for the breakfast shift – though it was a chilly walk to get there; and still cold when I headed home – even though it had warmed up by then.

The cold brought in the customers looking for a hot meal – and because farmers needed to do alternate work until it warmed up a bit anyway.  That worked for me too, since I could stay and help Miranda for a bit longer; and Dad waited for it to warm up before getting around to the outdoor chores.  We did still have work to do, since the fall clean-up will continue for weeks more thanks to the nice weather lasting longer than usual.  With the high temperature only reaching the mid-forties today, though; I would have been okay with another warmer day for doing that yard work – even if the chores are easier thanks to Dad’s toys – like the attachments for the lawn tractor that let us vacuum up and mulch the leaves.  That doesn’t help for things like the gardening, though; and we do have a lot of plants that need to be put to bed for the winter – along with everything else we do to get the gardens ready for winter.

I’m sure you’re not interested in gardening tips; and I wasn’t all that interested in the work – but it did keep us busy until we needed to clean up, have dinner, and then head over to Witch Falls Road for the Haunted Halloween Walk.

This year, I didn’t sign up to help with anything so that I could just have fun with Michael and our families.  There were still all of the games; musical entertainment; special food and drinks; and more to help keep everyone entertained before and after their turn going on the Haunted Halloween Walk; and we got in on all of that fun too.  I met up with Michael as soon as he was done at the Inn.  They closed up early – as did most of the businesses in town; but they had considered staying open this year and having Jake and Stephanie run it while Miranda and Jacob were busy with the walk.  They decided not to risk taking any business away from the food booths, and that was likely a good idea; since it was cold-enough out that quite a few people might have opted to wait in the dining rooms instead of wandering the streets.

Ethan and Ehlana met up with Aiden and Naomi; so we ended up having a fairly large group with parents, siblings, and some aunts, uncles, and cousins too.  We had a fairly-early time thanks to younger kids getting priority for that; and we got to have Miranda for our story-teller too!  I think she’s the best at that; and I loved getting another chance to experience the Halloween magic with her as she led us from the first tragic tale through to the ultimate battle between good and evil at the falls.  There wasn’t much change from last year, but that doesn’t matter for any of us; and I will never, ever get tired of this amazing tradition for our humble little town.

Our Halloween fun was far from over after the walk.  We had a bit more play time with more games; and then we headed home so that we’d be there in time to welcome all of the kids and junior babysitters that were converging on our house for the night so that the parents could go out to Sheldon’s for the Halloween party there.  Rowen and Tim joined us along with Patrick and Jessica; and the kids included all of my hometown cousins and a bunch of their friends.

Memo to me – in hindsight; dreaming of a sofa sleepover with some quality alone time with Michael was wishful thinking at best; and possibly a flat-out delusion caused by lack of sleep! ;^)

That means that I am not writing this between getting all of those kids to bed and hooking up with Michael for some teen-rated fun for two.  We have had fun tonight, though; and the kids have kept us busy and entertained.  We played spooky games; watched kid-friendly Halloween shows; and the babysitters in our group have run ourselves ragged keeping up with all of the action.  We didn’t even have the first kid fall asleep until after eleven; the last group was put to bed – for the fifth and final time – at one-thirty; and then Michael and I got to start dealing with other issues – like Faith’s need to wake up and have some quality cuddle time with us after Zack and Eli woke her up with their efforts to stay awake and scare their babysitters.

Mom and Dad took on designated driver duties tonight, so they were late getting home; and Michael and I were the last babysitters still awake by then – though Faith had fallen asleep again by then.  We put her to bed; had a short visit with Mom and Dad; and then Michael and I finished the clean-up before heading for our separate rooms.  We have campers in the lounge, and Mandy has Brianna in my room for a cuddle buddy; so I’ll need to see about having that alone time with Michael another time.

This update is being done now because I needed to wind down anyway; and ended up having a bit of work to do along with my usual bedtime computing and email checks.  I’m keeping the trend for late nights alive, but the Halloween fun has been great; and I’ll continue to survive the lack of sleep.  Brianna and Mandy look very happy right now, though, and cuddling with them for a few hours is going to be really nice; so I’m going to get to that right now.

Until next time...

Cassie's Journal - October 27, 2017

There is only one top story today, and that’s high school football; but the drop in temperature toward winter was a big deal too.  Starting our day with a sub-freezing ‘feels like’ temperature was a bit shocking to the system.  We still went outdoors for Tai Chi; and then had a hot breakfast to make up for that blast of cold.

Weather affected our football game tonight too – though not the ultimate results; and Michael, Tim, and their team mates won tonight to earn the undefeated regular season – and it was a big win over a really good Pinehurst team.  It’s late, though, and I need to have a nap before getting up for our breakfast shift at the Inn; so let’s move this along.

The weather forecasters were a bit optimistic today; and the temperature didn’t climb much above freezing.  That didn’t affect us for anything other than the walk to school or getting buses and minivans loaded up for the drive to Pinehurst after school; but it was a bigger deal at game time – and I’m not just saying that because the guys were disappointed that the cheerleaders were in winter weather gear tonight! ;^)

We really have been blessed to have had such great weather all season, and we didn’t have rain or snow to deal with tonight in addition to the chill; so I have no complaints about that – and the cold did give us an excuse to go with one of our cold-weather-themed half-time routines with the squad.  That little show went over well with the Pinehurst fans, but I am not going to spend any time on cheerleading; since I do need that sleep; and still have a lot of news to cover.

Pinehurst really wanted the win tonight and came to play; but they just weren’t able to keep up with our team – in part because they couldn’t adjust their game plan to deal with the cold.  We could; Michael and Tim successfully switched to a lot of short pass plays with lots of running yards after the catches; and they combined for seven touchdowns on the way to a sixty-one to twenty-nine victory.  Our team did make some mistakes along the way that were cold-related and that we need to work on heading into the playoffs, but Coach Robinson can’t really complain much either; since Pinehurst was only able to score two touchdowns and five field goals all night – and less than half of those scores were due directly to those mistakes.

The cold helped out with the post-game festivities; and we were on the way home from an away game earlier than for any of the other games this season.  That worked out for us because we’d already been missing out on the school Halloween dance by then; and we managed to get home in time to catch nearly the last hour of the dance.  The party became a bit of a football celebration after that too; Michael and I had a lot of fun; and then we stayed and helped out with the post-dance clean-up after not being able to do anything to help with the set-up after school.

It was past-two by the time we got home; I helped Michael with some Magi healing; and then sent him home so that we could save up the sofa sleepover for tomorrow night – when we won’t be as tired; and hopefully be able to make some time for some quality, teen-rated make-out fun.  I’ve had a bit of work that needed to be dealt with once I was able to do my bedtime email checks; took care of that; and lost a bit more nap time in the process.  I didn’t want to leave that work until Sunday night, though; and time was an issue for the charity request.  I won’t bore you with the details; since all of the family business and charity data is available elsewhere if you have that access; and I’m obviously starting to mentally wander off instead of just getting done and off to my nap time.

We’ve had a great day; our team is in first-place heading into the playoffs; and that’s going to, hopefully, make for an amazing month ahead as we head through Halloween and toward Thanksgiving.  That’s all ahead of us, though, and I need to focus on some nap time for the right now; so, until next time...

Cassie's Journal - October 26, 2017

Take yesterday, add in game night for the family and friends; and add just a tiny bit of warmer; and you pretty much have my day in a nutshell for today.

The weather is taking a turn for the cold overnight, so we’ll be back into fall temperatures for our final regular season football game, but I can write about that tomorrow night; and need to get what sleep I can tonight.  Al of the studying and work has caught up with me, and while I’m happy with where my friends are with getting ready for their SAT’s; I may hit the wall sooner than later.

For now, I’ll survive with a nap and some self-healing, but that’s also all I have for tonight; so, until next time...
