Ehlana's and Ethan's Journals - June 30, 2020

Ehlana and Ethan:

The final hours of another month are winding down for us, but while we’ve had a good day; there isn’t much news to report from around here.

We did get some lab or archives time today thanks to a splash or three of rain, and we’ll be home and in our beds again tonight instead of camping because there are more thunderstorms in the overnight forecast; so an early update now won’t have us missing out on anything too-exciting for those final handful of hours in June.  The play time during the rest of our day until we headed over to the lab was good too, but not newsworthy; and we seem to be waiting around for the holiday weekend to get here.  That’s more-true this year because we don’t have other activities to keep us busy – like baseball practices.

A late dinner with Mom and Dad is next on our schedule, so while we’re tempted to add a month-end reflection or commentary, we’ll resist the urge; wrap this up; and go have fun with our parents for the rest of the evening.  Sure, work or studying will be involved – especially since Magi lessons are easier to do while May is away, but we have fun with nearly-everything we do together; and the work helps us feel better about taking so much time off lately for playing.  The countdown will really seem to be on to the Fourth of July with the start of the new month tomorrow, so stay tuned; and we’ll hope that there will be lots of excitement to write about over the next week or three!

Ehlana's and Ethan's Journals - June 29, 2020

Ehlana and Ethan:

Dinner, church, and our camping night were all really great for us yesterday; and now we’ve had another awesome play day with our best friends while Cassie has been busy with her first day of mid-term exams.  Compared to that, our day has been amazing; but also uneventful or newsworthy.  That feels more-true compared to the ongoing problems around the world.

That’s really all we have for today.  This is only an early update because we have time right now before dinner.  We don’t really have any plans for tonight.  There’s a risk of thunderstorms overnight, so we’ll be in our rooms instead of the tent; and our best friends are already either home or at the bakery with their own families.  Mom’s going to do a Magi lesson with us tonight, and we may do some ‘real’ studying tonight too, but we’ll let you know about that with the next update.  For now, we’re done here; so we’ll move on to helping Mom with some of that pre-dinner work – and maybe some of the ongoing holiday weekend pre-cooking too.

Ehlana's and Ethan's Journals - June 28, 2020

Ehlana and Ethan:

We’ve had a fun play day; and we’ll be camping again tonight after we go to the evening church service.  This update is early because we’re going to be computer-free tonight; and we’re taking a break before dinner to get cleaned up after all of the biking, canoeing, and swimming.  There also isn’t really much news to write about anyway; so we can keep this short; and get back to our weekend wrap-up entertainment.

Before we do that, we should mention that we have already passed ten-million coronavirus cases; and there have now been more than a half-million deaths worldwide.  Those numbers should quiet the pandemic naysayers, but likely won’t do that; and we have no idea how big the numbers will need to be before that happens.  We can do the basic math, though, and know that ten million is still a small fraction of the seven-and-a-half billion people in the world; so we really are still just getting started on this crisis.

Finally, Cassie starts her mid-term exams tomorrow, and while we miss her; she’s enjoying the break from being stuck at home for months – even though the work level is likely higher as she helps more friends in-person.  They’ll be home late on Friday for the holiday weekend, but we’ll have more on that next weekend; and don’t need to drag this report out with details we don’t really have yet anyway.

We are looking forward to the holiday – even though it won’t be as exciting as usual, but the everyday fun with family and friends is awesome too; so we’re still having a pretty good summer-so-far even if it isn’t non-stop excitement and adventure.

Mom and Dad are actually very happy about that – and would likely tell us not to mess that up by wishing for more excitement; since Gwyneth Hathorne would be happy to help us out with that in a not-fun sort of way!

No, we don’t foresee any imminent danger; so she’s likely just busy with other plots to take over the world and whatever else junior Dark Magi Masters do for fun.

On that note, we’re out of here.  Stay tuned for more as we head into the holiday weekend and the next blast of hometown holiday and stay-cation adventures!

Ehlana's and Ethan's Journals - June 27, 2020

Ehlana and Ethan:

This ended up being pretty much an all-day chores event – including the pre-cooking for the holiday weekend.  Nobody now or in the near or distant future would want a detailed list of those chores; so we won’t offer that information here.  We did get rain this morning, though, so while it didn’t stick around for that long; it made for a fairly-messy day for us – especially when it came to working on the gardens and along the banks of the river.  It eventually got hotter and sunny this afternoon, but while that made the work more-comfortable; it didn’t really get easier as we helped with mowing the lawn; trimmed around trees; swept the driveway and sidewalks; and cleaned windows and doors.

There were lunch and snack breaks, but we didn’t get everything wrapped up until late-afternoon; so we just got cleaned up with a swim in the river; and then had a comparatively-early dinner that was with some aunts, uncles, cousins, and neighbors.  That was socially-distanced, but we had fun; and then we spent the evening together too – whether playing, biking, going for canoe rides, or just hanging around in the back yard.  Our campfire was spread out around two fire pits; we helped out with the music – along with Naomi and Aiden; and then that last blast of fun wrapped up early due to incoming threat of thunderstorms.

We’re not doing a sleepover tonight because our best friends’ parents miss their kids and want to spend time with them while they can, but we were happy to come inside; hit the tub or Jacuzzi; and have another bedtime that’s still well-before midnight even after a campfire.  That’s all we have for tonight, but we’ve had a good day even with all of the work; and feel pretty good after sharing all of that with Mom and Dad.  There is going to be more pre-cooking tomorrow, but we won’t be helping with as much of that work; and plan on having more play time with Naomi and Aiden.  We’ll let you know how that goes with the next report, but we’re ready to get started on the nap time now; so we will.

Ehlana's and Ethan's Journals - June 26, 2020

Ehlana and Ethan:

We’re home and indoors tonight; our best friends are with their own families; and we’re all going to catch up on our sleep tonight while taking a break from camping and enjoying the comforts of our bedrooms.  Our play day yesterday, camping last night; and more outdoor fun today was all really awesome, but not newsworthy, so we’ll move on; and offer some commentary on local and world news instead for this report.

Coronavirus issues continue around the world; though the hotspots are moving around – either within countries or in new places.  The reported numbers are growing fast; and we wish that more people – and especially the world leaders – would look at this pandemic as something we need to deal with together.  We mean that on a global level, since while some countries have made efforts to help outside of their borders; most have not; and that’s true within countries too as even local regions fight over limited resources to fight the pandemic.  That isn’t a suggestion that we disagree with policies that restrict travel and encourage social distancing and lockdowns where necessary, but we do have a problem with how a lot of that has been done; and those restrictions don’t also have to keep us from helping each other around the world.  We definitely shouldn’t be feeling good or comfortable here at home while the pandemic is devastating people, families, communities, and countries just because it doesn’t affect us personally.

That ought to be true for any crises and problems that are constantly going on, but should be especially-true right now.

Ranting about this in our journals won’t make any difference; so we’re really only offering our commentary because this is going to continue to be an emergency through the rest of this year – and possibly for years to come.  The big increases in new cases both in our country and elsewhere is also affecting us here at home – even as we still haven’t had even one local case.  We do see the new outbreaks in the places that were first to ease their pandemic restrictions; and that’s affecting our community and plans for the summer.  The most-obvious for the near-future is what we will and won’t be doing over the holiday weekend; since we’re trying to balance keeping safe while still having at least some holiday fun.

The Fourth of July is also one of the biggest holidays for our local businesses; so trying to help them to survive a tough year is important too – if not as important as keeping everyone safe and healthy.  We’re glad that those choices aren’t ours to make – and won’t be anytime soon, but since our parents are involved; we do agree with pretty much everything we’re doing in our little town – even when that’ll mean a comparatively-quiet holiday weekend.  We’ll have more on that next weekend – and next week; since we are also working on plans for still having the annual cousins’ vacation visits.  That’s something to look forward to – as well as a reason for us to wrap this up and get some sleep soon; since tomorrow is going to be a holiday weekend prep-chores day for pretty much everyone in town.

Before we do that; we’ll also add an update for Cassie, Michael and May.  They’re looking forward to the weekend, and while Cassie has to study for mid-terms too; they’re going to try and have some fun as well – including a visit to Eagle Gorge that will be a play-study session for Cassie and her summer school buddies while Michael, May, and the others that are going along get to play all day.  That’s going to be a lot more fun than we’ll have, but since we have been able to play all week; we can’t complain about anything.

There is rain in the forecast for tomorrow; so we reserve the right to change our minds about that by the time we get around to our next update if we end up having a wet, messy work day! ;^)

Finally, getting back to one final comment about the pandemic; we should mention that we hit another milestone – two-and-a-half million confirmed cases in our country.  We’ll also hit ten million cases worldwide this weekend – up another million in under a week, and while that seems huge; it’s really still just the beginning when looking at this from the perspective of the total world population – or for here in our country.  Regardless of anyone’s view on under-counting actual cases; we expect those numbers to keep growing – though not without pauses and plateaus just as we’ve already seen as first waves of the virus move through different countries.

Let’s stop with that instead of ranting on; we’ll go get some sleep; and then do what we can to help out in our own small ways – with the chores that are boring, everyday things; but are needed to keep the world going – even for junior Magi Masters.  Mom might let us have some Magi-powered fun with the indoors chores, but that isn’t an option for the yard work; so we’ll have to do those chores the hard way – like everyone else.

If that isn’t true for you whenever you’re reading this in our future; we’ll either be jealous; or still around and enjoying the ability to openly use our Magi talents.  You decide whether we’re foreseeing that future or not! ;^)
