Ehlana and Ethan:
The hot weather continued today, and we’ve
had a lot of fun since our last update, but we’re going to take the bit of time
we have right now before we head to the evening church service for a
coronavirus update. The play time last
night, camping, and more outdoor fun today was all awesome, but we’ve also been
mentally-focused on more serious issues today too – possibly because Cassie
will be back to her school work again tomorrow.
Sure, she’ll be doing that online and from home – at least to start; but
the first semester of her senior year is still a big deal; and she is going to
be very busy keeping up with the double workload along with her family business
responsibilities.
Okay, now for the virus news.
There were some milestones hit today, and
while the numbers may be under-reported by a lot; they’re what we have to work
with; and do still have meaning.
Worldwide confirmed cases topped seven million today; we’ve passed two-million
cases in our country; and total deaths worldwide are now above
four-hundred-thousand. Those are all big
numbers, but the one that concerns us this weekend is from India. Their country has hit the quarter-million
cases number; and they’re likely to be the next major hotspot for the
virus. We won’t try to foresee what will
happen there, but hope that they won’t end up with a worst-case outcome – or even
a track similar to our country, Brazil, or other places. That could translate into tens of millions of
cases; and we don’t even want to think about how many people could die of this
virus there.
That brings us around to what we’re doing
about it. You’ve noticed that we haven’t
written about playing at the lab in a while – because we haven’t been there for
more than short visits while out on our bike rides. We will get back to spending time there, but
we can also take our work with us everywhere we go – mentally. Contrary to most news stories, there is no
easy solution for the coronavirus problem.
We’re actually concerned with some of the efforts to speed up testing
vaccines – especially when every scientist knows how badly that can be when
vaccines go wrong; and those bad results often don’t even show up for months or
years. Vaccines are also not cures, so
even if someone does come up with one that works; we could still be dealing
with this virus for years or more – just as we still have new strains of flu
and other diseases to deal with all of the time.
We’re not pointing any of that out to be
pessimistic – just realistic. Our humble
little lab has come up with a cure for colds – even if nobody else knows about
that yet; so we are hopeful that we can help with this problem too. That cold cure, though, was years in the
making; and it’ll be decades before it can be widely-available around the
world. That’s historically-true for
every treatment ever developed for diseases, viruses, and infections of various
kinds; so that isn’t going to suddenly change now. Our point for this is that we are working on finding
a vaccine or cure even when we’re not at the lab, but it is also going to take
time; and nobody can work day-and-night on anything indefinitely – not even
junior Magi Masters.
Taking care of ourselves – and this is true
for everyone – is very important if we want to do our best with our work. Filling our lives with love, happiness, and
joy is at least as important as keeping healthy; so we will continue to have
fun with our family and friends – even when we’re multi-tasking our efforts for
solving the serious problems – of which the coronavirus is just one. That’s enough seriousness for today, though,
and we do need to head for the church soon; so we’ll wrap this up and get on
with the rest of our evening – including another camping night with Naomi and
Aiden after we get home from the church.
We’ll write more on that tomorrow night – if there’s anything
interesting to report.
