Ehlana's and Ethan's Journals - Apri 30, 2021

Ehlana, Ethan, Naomi, and Aiden:

We’re beginning one last movie for the night as we’re writing this update; and might not get to the end of it before getting to the co-ed sofa sleepover part of our day.

Our day began – for two of us – with Tai Chi by the river with Mom and Dad; pancakes were on the breakfast menu for a last day of the month surprise; and then our school day was really very good thanks to nice weather and lots of outdoor time.  The awesome weather also had everything to do with our after-school entertainment choice to bike the trails and have a picnic snack with our friends that included Emporium ice cream; and then we had a bit of work to do at home to help Mom with getting ready for our dinner-and-a-movie night.

We ended up with a fairly-large gang this week that included our hometown relatives and lots of friends – enough to fill the sunroom and dining room during the meal.  Bonus guests this week included Pastor John, Stacey, and their kids; half of our Bassett family neighbors; and some friends and parents that came along with our cousins.  Dad had help with the major grilling work; sides and desserts were pot-luck; and we had a blast with the kids’ group for that meal – even with the food and drinks games that Zack and Eli encouraged and led while the adults were safely out of sight in the dining room.

Mom did not put us on the clean-up crew – beyond helping to clear the tables in the sunroom, but that work might have been easier than keeping up with all of the younger kids at the park for the hour or so that we were set free to keep ourselves entertained until movie time.  There weren’t as many parents at the house for the movie, but that was mostly because most of the parents that headed out were also getting a kid-free night.  No, Mom and Dad do not have a gang of kids here, but Naomi’s and Aiden’s parents are kid-free tonight; and our aunts and uncles are all among the parents that are hosting sleepovers for their kids’ friends.  The movie was kid-friendly, and ended up being pretty good because Zack and Eli led some of the guys up to the lounge for some video gaming instead; they got caught up in that action through until they were rounded up to head for their homes for the night; and forgot to bug the rest of us with even one prank or practical joke attempt!

Mom and Dad had our help for the post-movie and gaming clean-ups; we just got that finished; and now we’re going to enjoy the cuddle time with our favorite cuddle buddies.

The weekend is looking pretty good for us right now too, but we’ll save that news for the next couple of updates; wrap this up; and enjoy the show – and cuddling! ;^)

Stay tuned – or flip the digital page to read on in our future, but that’s all for tonight; so, until next time...

Ehlana's and Ethan's Journals - April 29, 2021

Ehlana and Ethan:

We’ve had an awesome day with a lot of fun that far-outweighed the work today, but we’re also tired; it is late; and we need to keep this short.

From Tai Chi by the river through to dinner time, we kept busy with our usual morning activities, our classes, and a couple of hours of biking and park play with our friends.  Dinner was quick and easy; game night at the Inn was one of the entertainment highlights of our day; and then Mom used a time phase after we got home so that we could all get our work or studying finished without staying up most of the night to do that.  Now we need to get some sleep to be ready for our last school day of the week and month; and to be ready for the start of May and our weekend adventures.

As always, we’ll let you know how our near future works out for us with the next few updates, but that is all for tonight; so, until next time...

Ehlana's and Ethan's Journals - April 28, 2021

Ehlana and Ethan:

We’re going to keep this update short and take advantage of an early bedtime opportunity.  Tai Chi and some morning play time at school was outdoors today, but rain and thunderstorms moved into the area this afternoon, so after a good day at school; we went to play at the lab or archives until dinnertime.  That was both fun and productive for both of us; we ended up having a late dinner that Mom saved for us after getting caught up in our work; and then she only did a Magi lesson with us before sending us up to our rooms for the night – mostly because she decided that we’ve been overdoing it – especially with the time-phased work.

She’s right about that, so we’ll skip writing about anything else tonight; wrap this up; and get started on our extended nap.

Ehlana's and Ethan's Journals - April 27, 2021

Ehlana and Ethan:

When it is seventy degrees out for Tai Chi by the river – and not raining too; that automatically makes for an awesome start to our day!  The highs for the day were in the low-eighties again too, which is why our school day was great too; and we followed that up with another round of biking and park adventure time with our friends through until dinnertime.  We were on our own with Mom and Dad for another barbeque dinner; worked or studied in the office after that; and wrapped up our day with bath or Jacuzzi time after we all went to take Silkie for a bedtime walk at around nine o’clock.  That’s pretty much all of the news for our personal adventures, but before we wrap this up and get some sleep; we want to add a minor Cassie and Michael update – even though their stories are available in their own journals.

You can get those details directly from their journals, but we were thinking about them a lot tonight – and talking about plans for the short time they’ll be home once they’re finished with finals exams two-weeks from this coming Friday.  They’re currently busy with getting ready for final exams that will be starting two-weeks from yesterday, but Cassie is also extra-busy with her T.A. duties as the final projects, assignments, and tests are submitted and need to be graded and then passed along to the Professors she’s working with this year.  Cassie is not, by the way, the most-loved T.A. at her college, but that isn’t because the freshman students don’t like her – they just don’t appreciate her impartial, fair, and always-accurate grading of their work.  She also can’t be bribed, but then that’s more of a statement of the education system that there are so many people that believe that cheating is a profitable path to success on both sides of those kinds of deals.

We’ll be busy with our own school days for most of the time they’ll be home, but hope that we’ll get to spend time with them in the evenings and on weekends.  While we talked about things that we could do with them; we should also mention some news that won’t be public knowledge until after they get home.

First and sure to be most-important to all local football fans; Michael and Tim have been quietly getting ready to play football for their college team in their senior year.  They attended the open spring training days; have been working out and resumed weight training; and will be attending the summer training camp too.  We can also report that they will make the team – a fact that they’ve been assured of by the coaches; and we have no doubt that they will be among the fastest pair of wide receivers in their school’s history.

Okay, they will be the fastest-ever, but they also won’t be able to show off just how fast they could be if they used their Magi talents – especially now that Michael can do time-phasing! ;^)

We’ll have more on that through the rest of the year, but the second part of this news story is that Cassie will be working as a T.A. for the team through the fall semester – and that is entirely so that she’ll be able to travel with Michael and the team as needed.  That doesn’t entirely fit in with the start of her doctoral studies in Linguistics – unless you think that football players have a language of their own, but those trips will give her some useful opportunities to do research at other universities and possibly to work with other linguistics Professors and students.

Rowen isn’t sure whether she can do anything to be able to travel with Tim, but Cassie has suggested that even if Rowen needs to stay at school during the week; she’ll drive or fly to the road games and spend the weekends with him.  She knows how important this chance to play college ball is to Tim, though; so they’ll work it out – and then Tim can make it up to her for any sacrifices she’ll need to make while helping that dream to come true for him.

Finally, those plans will likely mean less time for us with Cassie and Michael this summer and fall, but while Michael is doing this for his best friend; we’re also sure that the college football credentials will be good for his future career too – and not just because economists have such a bad reputation right now!  We’ll deal with that too; and then hope for some extra time with them over the final year and a half of their college adventures.

Okay, that’s more than enough for today, and we are past-ready for some quality nap time; so, until next time...

Ehlana's and Ethan's Journals - April 26, 2021

Ehlana and Ethan:

The top local news for most of our friends and neighbors was the great weather day as we started out the day with temperatures in the high-fifties and then warmed into the low-eighties this afternoon.  That was a major factor in the fun for our day too, but we also had a future plans meeting tonight that Mom and Dad hosted; we’re moving into another phase where a lot is going to be happening over the next couple of years; and all of that is very exciting too.

Tai Chi by the river was great thanks to the warm; we followed that up with a standard weekday breakfast; and then our school day was awesome because we got to spend a lot of time outdoors – including most of the afternoon.  That might seem strange to some kids and teens in other places, but we can take our computers anywhere in town and still have them link to the school systems; our teachers love to be outside as much as we do; and it is possible to learn almost any lesson by going out and exploring the world too.

Okay, sometimes our teachers just want to get out and play too, but we’re okay with that! ;^)

The warm weather had everything to do with our choices to go biking with our friends after school; we met up with the usual gang after checking in with parents first; and then we hit the trails starting with the loop around town the long way to the park.  Those two hours of exercise and entertainment were a highlight of our day, but we also enjoyed the barbeque and cold salads dinner out on the patio with Mom and Dad; we helped with the dinner clean-up; and then our guests began arriving for the meeting.

We don’t attend every future plans meeting, but this one was fairly-important, and while we can’t usually talk about what we know of our future even with Mom and Dad; this was one of those times when we could offer some guidance and suggestions.  As we’ve already mentioned, the next couple of years are going to get busier around here.  We won’t cover the entire meeting here, since that’s already written about in detail elsewhere; so we’ll stick to some of our personal highlights.

First up – though not in meeting agenda order; we’re happy with the progress and plans for the galleria shopping project.  The elevator installation is the most-challenging part of the internal construction because of both the engineering and the construction, but it was important to get it done to make a lot of the other construction work easier.  That part of the project has been a challenge for Dad, Aunt Leanne, Claire, and anyone else trying to work in stores or offices next to the elevator, but it will be operational soon – if not cosmetically-finished.  We don’t want to get bogged down in the weeds of construction details, but in this and other cases; the finishing touches will wait until after all of the heavy lifting is done.  The biggest engineering challenge for the galleria project this summer – and the one that will be most-exciting to watch – will be the two-level atrium walkway that will connect the two buildings on either side of Old Mill Road.  Our guy friends are really going to love watching that work – and the set-up for it is already underway, but while we’re excited about a nearer-future with more shopping and entertainment options; we’re also happy because that work will mean extra visits from the Malloys and our Proctor cousins whenever Terry or Uncle Blaine need to be here for the engineering or architectural needs of the project.

That ties in a bit with our next topic – plans for our college graduates.  In this case, we’re talking about upcoming grads – not only this year’s class.  Some of Cassie’s and Michael’s friends are going to be involved in the galleria – either through the stores or in other ways, but while they have had some involvement in these plans; those choices have as much to do with wanting at least some of the new stores to be geared toward kids, teens, and young adults.  Getting more tourism for the town is part of that plan, but again; we don’t want to get bogged down in the details.  The Galleria will be opening in time for Memorial Day next year, so that part of our meeting tonight was all about helping the prospective business owners to get ready for starting those stores over the summer – whether that is with making business plans and getting financing to working on plans for the construction that will happen as each store is readied for the work that can be done through this coming winter and into next spring.  The next year is going to be very exciting for everyone involved in those projects too; and we’re happy to be helping some of Cassie’s and Michael’s friends with making their own dreams come true.  We’re sure to have more on the galleria project to write about this summer, but let’s move on.

We don’t have much direct involvement through the family business for Quarry Lake, but have helped the owners with help from some of our Magi friends/ and have personal interest in their plans and success.  For this year, they’re looking to get new business from sports enthusiasts – particularly with getting bookings for sports camps.  They’ll be opening a new, multi-use sports field complex this year, and if that works out for them; we’ll likely get weekly busloads of kids and teens coming to town for outings while at those camps.  Once the trail between here and Quarry Lake is completed next spring; we expect to have campers do day rides to town; and that could work for sports training too.

This update is getting a bit long, so let’s wrap the meeting news up with news for Cassie and Michael.  This part of the plan still has two years to be completed, but Uncle Blaine will be designing their new home sometime over the coming year; and then construction on it will start next summer so that it will be ready by the time they graduate in May of 2023.  It is a bit early to start getting excited about having them home again, but we are looking forward to having them home to stay – and not just because we’ll be able to do co-ed sleepovers at their house just as we’re hitting our tween years and our parents might start to have a problem with us doing that here at home! ;^)

Let’s save the details for that little project for another time and wrap up this report with the rest of our news for the day.  The meeting ended at a bit after ten o’clock; we came upstairs for bath or Jacuzzi time; and the adults in the house continued to have a visit for a while after we left.  Mom and Dad are on their own in the office now, but Dad still has work he’s getting done; so they may be awake for a while – even if Mom helps him out with a time phase.  It is getting late, though, so we need to go and get some sleep.  The future plans meetings always leave us feeling good and very hopeful for our collective future, and we’re going to take all of that happy with us into nap mode now; so, until next time...
