Ehlana and Ethan:
The camping last night was awesome; and we’ve
had another fun play day to this point too, but we’ll skip the rest of the
local news for today; and focus this update on more-serious news from around
the world.
Then we’ll get back to the
family-and-friends’ fun for the rest of the day and through the weekend.
Since our last report, total worldwide
confirmed cases have passed twenty-one million; and we’re continuing to add a
million cases every four days. That has
leveled off a bit, but as some regions see a decrease in new cases; there are
new break-outs elsewhere. There is new
information coming out about how this virus affects kids – or doesn’t, but
there is still a lot that we don’t know; and we won’t even guess at what might
happen as schools re-open – especially when there are very different plans in
place for doing that in this country and around the world. Seasonal changes didn’t happen with this
virus as some expected this summer; so we also have no idea what will happen
this fall.
Taking that comment to go on a little
side-trip; let’s talk about our talent for Sight in relation to the
pandemic. In a nutshell; there are far
too-many possibilities for the future than we could ever hope to sort through
to find our most-likely future.
Explaining that by example is actually easy with this crisis; since the
differences between countries or in regions within countries proves our point
for this. All of those better and worse
outcomes are possibilities that we’d see if we tried to focus our Sight on the
pandemic. We’d see all of the choices
that have – or will – be made; and when it comes to worldwide issues; that adds
up to hundreds of billions of choices – all of them leading to different outcomes. Add in the fact that some choices cascade to
affect others; and you get the idea for why a Magi might just go crazy trying
to figure it all out – let alone try to change the future.
We value our sanity; so we just won’t go
there.
Moving along, vaccines are still in the
news for the coronavirus. Russia has now
been first to approve a vaccine developed by their scientists; and the
reactions around the world have been political and expected. We don’t care who comes up with a safe,
effective vaccine, but have serious concerns about all of the vaccines being
rushed into testing; and understand the risks of cutting corners to try and get
a vaccine that can be widely-distributed.
We won’t comment on these decisions that world leaders are currently
making, but will point out that we understand weighing the risks when a quarter
of a million people are catching the virus every day and forty-thousand a week
are dying from it. Unfortunately; it’ll
take hindsight to know whether the potential cures will work or do more harm
than good.
Okay, that’s enough for today. We’ll still be thinking about this – and mentally-working
on finding a vaccine or cure too – which, by the way, is not the same thing;
but we’re also going to have a fun weekend – starting with a family-and-friends’
barbeque picnic dinner and play night; a campfire; and another camping
night. Stay tuned; and we’ll have all of
that news and more with the next few updates.
