Ehlana's and Ethan's Journals - May 31, 2020

Ehlana and Ethan:

We’re winding down the final hours of May, and we’re tired; so this will be a micro-report.

Our Saturday night ended with the movie and cuddle time; a bedtime visit with Mom, Dad, and May  after they got back from the Inn; and then it was time to get some sleep.  Yes, there was a co-ed sofa sleepover in the lounge; and we were very happy campers when we woke up this morning!

Church services resumed today, but with three socially-distance sessions – two in the morning; and the evening service that we attended after dinner.  Mom and Dad wanted to help our neighbors with that; and it’s easier for us to attend in the evenings than it is for others that need to start their work days much-earlier than we do.  That gave us the rest of the day for other activities, which for us included some morning studying for our final tests that start tomorrow; and a play afternoon that included a canoe ride; biking; and games in the back yard.

Cassie and Michael spent some time with us, but they were also busy with the post-wedding events with his family and some of Rebecca’s and Lucas’ visiting college friends.  They also helped Jen at the pizzeria for the dinner rush; so they’ve been very busy today.  Since getting home from church, we’ve had a quiet evening that included bath or Jacuzzi time; a music practice; and some television show-watching.  We’ll start our first end-of-term testing tomorrow, but that really isn’t a big deal compared to the teen exams – especially for the seniors; so our studying for them is entirely for show; and we’ll get those tests done every morning and still have afternoons off – even though that won’t be true for older kids or teens.

We will basically be done school for this term in five days, though, so that’s great; and we’ll have play days for the final week – just as we’d normally do if we’d been at school instead of working from home.

That’s all for tonight from here, but we’ll also add that our thoughts and prayers are with everyone dealing with the growing list of problems that so many people are dealing with here in our country and around the world.  The pandemic is still the most-serious challenge, but the addition of the protests and riots are a real danger too; and we hope for calm and peace even while we understand the anger and outrage that so many people are feeling.

We really don’t need to add our commentary to any of these stories, and this hasn’t ended up being a micro-report at all; so we’ll just digitally shut-up now; get some sleep; and get rested and ready for our year-end tests.  That seems unimportant by comparison, but school tests and exams are as inevitable as taxes; and not even a pandemic will keep us from having to write them!

Ehlana's and Ethan's Journals - May 30, 2020

Ehlana, Ethan, Naomi, and Aiden:

Congratulations, Lucas and Rebecca Norton!

Their wedding reception is still going on as we write this; and we have grandparent babysitting services while Mom, Dad, Cassie, Michael, and May are at the Inn.  Yes, we would have been there too if not for the pandemic, but just being able to attend the wedding ceremony is an improvement – along with the socially-distanced dinner and reception that only includes kids of the Norton or Stone family.  We want to write about that a bit tonight; so we’ll do that instead of a major report of the rest of our day.

First up, Rebecca’s grandparents, aunt, uncle, and Stone-family cousins didn’t come home for the wedding, but it was live-streamed; and they did watch the ceremony – and they had a video chat with Rebecca and Lucas too.  We totally get that for their grandparents, but the risks were low for the rest of their family – probably lower than what they deal with every day at home and work.  As for being at the church this afternoon; it was strange to be there for the first time in months; and felt odd to have a quarter of the number of people in the sanctuary as it can hold spread out in every-other-row and only together in small family groups with six-feet between each group.  that was still far-fewer guests than would be normal for a wedding that would have been as big as Cassie and Michael’s wedding last year; but once again, that was still much-better than recent weddings that couldn’t have more than a few guests.

The four of us went to the wedding as couples, but while that was technically a date; it didn’t really feel like it without the rest of the normal wedding fun.  It was also a lot of work for two of us to get dressed up; and then have the occasion end for us an hour or so later.  Sure, we still had the rest of the afternoon for fun and games, but we would have loved going to the dinner and reception more.  That really wasn’t an option; since Rebecca and Lucas could only choose about one-hundred and twenty-five guests for that reception.

We did see them again – while they did the photo shoot at the park, but that was it; and we didn’t hang out while they did that, but continued on with our trail riding.  Grandma and Grandpa took care of an easy dinner that included cold salads and burgers or hotdogs after that; and we’ve been having a movie night since coming in from an evening walk with them – and with Silkie.  Other than our chores this morning; that’s pretty much all of our own news; and we didn’t really spend much time with Cassie and Michael today because they were busy with the wedding pretty much from Tai Chi to now.

Finally, the pizzeria was closed for the day, but will be open again tomorrow; so we’ll manage to collectively survive a day without a fast food option in town! ;^)

We still plan on watching one more movie; a co-ed sofa sleepover is likely; and if we have anything to add from the rest of our day; we’ll include it with the next report.

Ehlana's and Ethan's Journals - May 29, 2020

Ehlana and Ethan:

We’re having a quiet day – and that seems like a contrast both to others around us who are busy; and national and world events that are heating up in some really bad ways.

For our own news, we had a shorter-than-usual study session this morning; spent the rest of that time helping out with decorating at the church; and then we took a picnic lunch and went biking for the afternoon on the trails and at the park.  That was, in part, to get out of the way while Mom, Cassie, and Michael were busy.  May was with Cassie or Mom a lot today too; so we really didn’t see any of them very much until dinnertime.  Busy parents can be fun for kids – especially when dinner is pizzeria pizza!  That worked for us, and we had Naomi and Aiden with us for that meal, but then they headed for their own homes after we did a Magi lesson with Mom after dinner; and then had a bit more outdoor fun – this time, with Silkie in the back yard.  We took Silkie for a walk too – while seeing our best friends home; and then we’ve been on the third floor for most of the time since then.  We had a music practice; are watching a movie now; and our favorite collegians won’t likely be back until just before midnight.  Rebecca won’t have all of her bridesmaids with her overnight, but she will be with Jen; and Garrett is having Lucas stay at his house while Jen is away for the night.

That’s a social-distancing choice, but Cassie and Michael are glad that they won’t be split up for the night too.  They will still be back together with the rest of the wedding party by early-morning; so we’re only talking about a handful of hours anyway.  We’re going to head for bed after this movie; and won’t be staying up until they get home tonight.

Before we wrap this up and continue that show; let’s take a moment to comment on a few of the world issues that are big news today.  The pandemic is still a news story, but topping six-million confirmed cases worldwide isn’t getting as much attention as the riots and protests that are going on in a lot of different cities and countries.  We aren’t going to offer an opinion on any of those stories, but we will point out that politicians and reporters don’t seem to be able to let an emergency go past without trying to take advantage of them.

Then again, most of the major news media outlets spent hours covering the amazing story of the first manned, commercial space flight to the International Space Station – that’s totally paid for by the government; only to have the mission scrubbed because those ‘private’ experts apparently couldn’t check the weather forecast to find out that there would be lightning and storms in the area during the launch window.  Mentioning that isn’t meant to say anything other than that all of these stories seem to be distractions that some really bad people are hiding their own actions behind.

Let’s not get into a rant about anything tonight.  We’re going to have a happy weekend, and while this has been a quiet day for us; we’re going to wrap it up with this last bit of twin-time fun; and then get some sleep.  Stay tuned; since Rebecca and Lucas’ wedding is a big deal here at home – even if it can’t be the biggest event of the summer.

Ehlana's and Ethan's Journals - May 28, 2020

Ehlana and Ethan:

We’re so happy for the weather experts for actually getting a rain day right! ;^)

That might be the only reason to be happy about a rain day, but we still had fun today – whether studying all morning with our best friends or playing at the lab all afternoon.  Following that up with a ‘real’ study evening isn’t exciting, but we’re happy; and ready to get some sleep now.

Cassie, Michael, and May have been busy with wedding work today, so we haven’t seen them much since breakfast; and they’re definitely having more fun – especially with the socially-distanced dinner and roast for the happy couple at the Inn.

Rebecca and Lucas will have the top story of the next few days around here, but we won’t have a lot of involvement other than going to the ceremony with Mom and Dad on Saturday; and helping with decorating the church tomorrow.  Cassie and Michael will be busier, but we’ll spend less time dressed up; and the weather should be great for outdoor play time too.  We can write about that as we go along, but that’s all we have for tonight; and we really are ready to crash and get some sleep so we’ll be ready for the next few days of play time!

Ehlana's and Ethan's Journals - May 27, 2020

Ehlana and Ethan:

Happy 3rd Anniversary, Violet and Dillon!
Congratulations, Lynn and Mitch Bassett – you’re pregnant!

We’re going to keep this update short because we’re writing it between our evening studies and music practice – before putting our computers away for the night.

Those top news stories today didn’t affect us very much – other than we took the day off from the lab because Violet and Dillon took the day off too while celebrating their special day.  They had a dinner with friends too, but that didn’t include us; so we only had a video chat with them at breakfast and sent a group gift.

Lynn and Mitch’s news was fun too, but a more-important story for Cassie and Michael; since Mitch is Michael’s cousin.  Another coronavirus-lockdown baby is fun for everyone in town too – and those stories will be back again in about eight or nine months; and then continue for years to come.

As for our news, we had a quiet study morning; a biking and park play afternoon; and more studying or work in the office tonight.  Cassie, Michael, and May are on the way home now, but won’t be here for a few hours; so we may not wait up for them.  The weather was nice – if not really hot; and playing today seemed a good idea because we’ll likely be indoors for most of tomorrow.  We’re not doing any sleepovers yet this week, but may take a break from that for the rest of the week; since we’ll want to camp a lot as soon as we’re done with the daily school work.

That’s it for now, and we’re ready for some music fun while we wind down; so we’ll move on and do that now.
