Ethan and Ehlana:
After a very busy, exciting weekend; it has been nice to get back to normal again today. We didn’t need to get up early to see Dad off on his trip to the city, but after being up late; that didn’t really make much difference for our sleep last night. Tai Chi by the river and breakfast were quiet with just the three of us – plus Silkie; we had a good day at school with extra fun thanks to the interest in our own weekend highlights for the gossip network; and then we opted for playing at the lab or archives after that.
Since Dad is away, Mom brought dinner to us at the lab after doing her own thing at home until then; we stayed and played at the lab until a bit after nine o’clock; and then wrapped up our day with a bedtime walk for Silkie that included one front porch visit along the way.
My work in the archives wouldn’t interest very many Magi, since I’m mostly going through the physical archives and checking them against digital copies while cross-referencing the information to make everything more-usable for everyone, but Ehlana’s work in the lab is always awesome – even when the details are technical and beyond anyone without the doctoral-level knowledge of the research she’s doing. We are overdue for an update for her work, though, so let’s take a minute to do that.
While the lab is still researching the corona viruses and mutations, and Ehlana keeps up with that work and offers her advice; I’ll only report that our hometown ‘vaccine’ works to protect against the current mutations; and we don’t currently expect to need to offer any additional treatments – even if we do need to have placebo booster shots for appearances only. We would like to mention that those booster shots might not be effective for any of the major vaccines that are out there, but while the science behind that would be boring for you; the reason for that bit of news is that using the same vaccine over and over again can actually decrease protection against a virus by making mutations more-likely and also resistant to the vaccines.
Moving along, though, Ehlana’s current research priority continues to be her work on cures for cancer. Our Magi Master talents allow us to pretty much self-heal from anything, and we can use our healing abilities to overcome diseases like cancers too, but that doesn’t help millions of people; and finding a way to have what we do with our Magi talents work in some form of natural treatment is not easy – especially when we don’t often understand the ‘how’ behind our Magi abilities. That probably sounds funny, but there haven’t actually been any Magi Masters trained as deeply in biological sciences as Ehlana is before now; so there isn’t much for us to work with in the archives. There are a lot of stories chronicling healing by past Magi Masters, but they often didn’t even have useful names for diseases they cured let alone a genetic-level understanding of the medical problems.
My point here is that the work we’re doing at the lab is all-new; and we have no idea how long it will take to find our cures for cancer or for anything else we’re working on there. We do know that it will happen, though; so even the boring and tedious parts of the work don’t really keep us from being excited about every project at the lab.
That’s enough for tonight. We’ve had a good day – if not in a play-fun kind of way; we’re planning on more of the same for tomorrow; and need to get some sleep to be ready for those academic and work adventures. With that task up next on our to-do lists, we’re off to see the Sandman soon; so, until next time...
