Ehlana's and Ethan's Journals - February 23, 2024

Ehlana and Ethan:

Congratulations – you’re getting another short update in a row!  That’s because Ethan and I need to get going soon and we’re only home to pack overnight bags before grabbing our bikes and heading over to Sophia’s house.  That’s where we’re meeting up with our friends – and where we’ll be spending the night.  Naomi, Aiden, and Aaron will be staying there too, and we may have some other friends over for part of the night too, but we’ll have to let you know how that goes; since it’ll be up to Sophia to figure that out with the rest of our friends.

Tai Chi was chilly and by the river; we had a hot breakfast with Mom; and our school day was good while being uneventful.  The rest of our news for the day is yet to happen, so we’ll wrap this up; move on; and get started on all of the fun we expect to have with our friends.

Until next time, live with love, fellow Magi of the Light!

Ehlana's and Ethan's Journals - February 22, 2024

Ehlana and Ethan:

We were bad today – though not really; since our version of bad in this case was taking the day off from work so that we could have fun with our family and friends instead.  Our academic adventures included bonus outdoor time again; we chose to bike and play with our friends instead of working at the lab or archives.  Dinner and the clean-up with Mom was quick and easy; and then we got back to playing while at the Inn for game night.  Mom helped Miranda with winning the senior championship; and then we skipped doing any work tonight while going straight to bath or Jacuzzi time after getting home.

That’s also pretty much all we have for tonight and I’m even okay with skipping any added commentary on anything, so we’re going to wrap this up and move on to nap time right now.

Until next time, live with love, fellow Magi of the Light!

Ehlana's and Ethan's Journals - February 21, 2024

Ehlana and Ethan:

Our adventures with Cassie and Michael were awesome!  They went with our gang of friends for the bike ride; we went with an easy-meal that included Sophia and Aaron after Michael invited them to join us for the night while on the bike ride; and then our evening included ‘live’ music, video gaming, and an action movie before we eventually moved on to co-ed nap time that was on sofas or a floor-nest for the teens and tweens in the house.  That hardly covers all of the details for last night, but it was being together that mattered for us; so I’ll only add that Cassie did a group Magi lesson with us too because she could – and because Mom had suggested it to her for a change for us.

Tai Chi was by the river this morning and for eight; the guys cooked up a hot breakfast for us; and then we all pitched in on the clean-up before eventually heading for school.  Thanks to another nice-weather day with a high in the low-sixties, we had a good day at school with bonus outdoor time and then we’ve had another play afternoon with our friends that included biking and some football at the park that the girls did not get in on and we opted for the girl chat time instead while watching our favorite boys play for a while.  Ethan and I had a quick visit with Mom after school before the biking, but caught up on her travel news while sharing dinner with her.  WE took care of the clean-up; and then we’ve had a quiet evening since then with a Magi lesson and some office work before it was bath or Jacuzzi time for all of us.

Now that we’re clean and comfortable, the bedtime computing and twin chat has kept us busy, and while there is always a lot of news to keep up with; I am not going to offer any commentary or rants on those world events stories.  Instead of going there tonight, we’re going to go with a lighter topic to write about tonight, and Ethan loves this too; since it is all about books! ;^)

You might be preparing for the boredom just from the mention of books – especially if you have a lot of experience with reading from the archives, but that isn’t where we’re going tonight.  Yes, we do a lot of serious reading, but Ethan and I also read a lot of fiction too.  In his case, thanks to his special gift for reading, that can mean a ‘fun-reading’ book a day that he can do in minutes instead of hours.  We read books in pretty much any genre, but for tonight, what we want to comment on is comparatively-recent fiction and how funny we find story details that relate to technology at the time, current events viewed in hindsight, and impressions of what the future would be like in our time.

You, reading this in our future, might soon be laughing at us for potentially doing the exact same thing with our own journals, since we do occasionally mention current tech and events that might be amusing in the future, but we won’t let that stop us from writing about this tonight.  When it comes to tech, we can’t help but laugh when story details mention ‘high tech’ devices such as VHS players, car phones, or any of the hundreds of devices from past decades that most kids our age couldn’t even name let alone know what they are if seen.  Taking that into the future, we also rarely read any books that make future-tech predictions that come very close to our reality – whether that is from underestimating progress or overstating it.  That’s especially-true for fiction written in the years during and after the ‘space race’ when everyone seemed to believe that we’d leap from the moon to the stars as-quickly as we went from being planet-bound to the moon.  Most current Magi do have fun when it comes to future predictions of humans developing superpowers, but then that’s likely always been true for Magi; since that would be true for every story along those lines that have ever been written or told.

Current events and life-descriptions in these stories can be funny in a lot of different ways.  That’s true for serious issues too, but we aren’t going there tonight.  On the entertaining side, though, Ethan and I love reading descriptions about pop culture that our parents and grandparents lived through and sometimes remember fondly, but it is fun to note trends that come back around again too.  We love music references, and thanks to our current tech, Ethan and I will usually look up those artists and songs to listen to them and add context to the stories we’re reading.  Ditto that for movie references – though we don’t necessarily watch entire movies, since we can’t really speed that up or take the time to enjoy.  I really don’t want to get into anything serious tonight, but will at least need to mention that some current event descriptions or character thoughts about what is happening in the story have different context for us due to major historical events like 9/11, wars, or other historical moments.  On the other hand, there are also some similarities regardless of when the books were written, and for an easy example, we find it amazing that most authors see their current time as being bad or even the worst-ever.  The economy is usually bad, crime is out of control, the world is a mess, and survival is an everyday struggle – whether fighting off zombies or on the journey toward your happily-ever-after!

There is a good chance that you are laughing at us now, since I frequently write about all of the bad we see in the world, but in defense, don’t forget that we also write about how amazing our personal lives are; we have an amazing home town; and we hope for the same kind of love and joy for everyone in the world.  We also expect that we will succeed in helping to make that happen in the coming years and decades.  There is some validity to the other side of that, though, and while we’ve never suggested that our ‘now’ is worse than other times in history; we probably should write more about positive stories from around the world.  There are, after all, billions of people that enjoy lifestyles and prosperity better than most generations in history could ever even imagine.

Let’s take that thought and bring it back around to what we’re writing about – fictional stories; since perception and imagination are what we’re commenting on for this long-winded ramble.  For our personal contribution to the archives and current events writing, we’ll try our best to do that accurately and hope that our future Magi readers won’t find our stories too-funny for the wrong reasons.  As for predictions of the future, we are sometimes tempted to have some fun with that, since we do have some advantages thanks to our talents in that area, but we won’t go there.  The next Ascension is going to be ‘of the Light’ not ‘to the stars’!

That is also a great place to end this update, and we’re ready to get some sleep now – so we will! ;^)

Until next time, live with love, fellow Magi of the Light!

Ehlana's and Ethan's Journals - February 20, 2024

Ehlana and Ethan:

Mom is in the city tonight; we’re about to head over to Cassie and Michael’s house along with Silkie; and this update is early because we’re going to be busy with them – and with Naomi and Aiden – for the rest of the day.  We had a good day at school without any real news worth mentioning; our school band practice was really short because the weather is great and nobody wanted to be there and indoors anyway; so we were given the next batch of music that we’ll be learning over the next couple of months and then we were set free.

Thanks to that break, we’re planning on going biking once together with our best friends, and hope that Cassie and Michael will come along with us; so we need to go and get that started while it is still warm and sunny.  The rest of our news for today can wait for the next report, so stay tuned for that; and we’ll move on and live those adventures starting right now!

Until next time, live with love, fellow Magi of the Light!

Ehlana's and Ethan's Journals - February 19, 2024

Ehlana and Ethan:

Happy 28th Birthday, Christina Palmer!

Happy 23rd Birthday, Kris Robinson!

Dad – and Anna Marie – headed for the city this morning, and while it is Presidents’ Day and the courts are closed; they took advantage of that; and had meetings booked for non-judicial negotiations and contracts for their clients.  We were up early for their departure; and then the rest of our morning was quiet as we eventually got around to Tai Chi and breakfast with Mom before heading off to school.  Just in case that seems odd in the future, our school doesn’t take days off for every federal holiday, and while extra long weekends might be nice; we prefer the extra time off during the summer that we get more of than even most of the public schools in the area.  That especially works for the farm families, but then many of the businesses are busier with summer tourists and campers; so that works for part-time teen help too.

Our school day was uneventful; Ethan and I opted for another round of play-work at the lab or archives while saving up play time for the warmest days of the week that are still ahead of us; and we got home in time for a late dinner with Mom.  We pretty much got to have the lab to ourselves today because many of the younger adults were busy with one or both of the birthday dinner-parties tonight.  Cassie and Michael went to one of the dinners and planned on a cameo visit to the other; so they’ve been busy tonight while our evening only included that late dinner, the clean-up, and a Magi lesson before we opted for an early bedtime after the early start to our day.

We’ve finished up the rest of our usual bedtime computing, and now I’m past-ready for some world news commentary that could get all the way to a rant; so let’s go there – even though Ethan would be happy with skipping that part of our update!  The conflicts in the Middle East continue to worsen and expand; and it breaks my heart to see and hear about all of the awful things that are happening to the people on both sides of the fighting while being unable to do very much to help them.  The human cost is horrific; and nobody in power seems to care about that – or the tens of billions of dollars being wasted on both the weapons and everything being destroyed by those bombs and missiles.  Despite claims to the contrary, our leaders are ignoring history; allowing a genocide to happen to the Palestinians; and there are no excuses for letting that happen at the least and aiding and abetting at worst.

The war in Ukraine is only different in that the leaders in Ukraine are part of the problem as they go along with the destruction of their own country and citizens for no other reason than to keep power and enrich themselves.  The latest from Ukraine is that their armed forces have needed to retreat from a key defensive city, and while accurate news can be tough to find; it appears as though that retreat has been even more of a disaster than the U.S. pullout from Afghanistan was a few years ago – with the main difference being heavy troop and equipment losses.  At this point, Ethan and I think that the best that Ukraine can hope for now is that their leaders will capitulate and work out a deal with Russia while their worst-case will be the total collapse of what is left of their army, defeat, and terms of surrender that Russia would dictate to them and then enforce.  All of that is grim, and most leaders in the west wouldn’t believe it or agree; so we’ll find out eventually whether we’re right or not.

I haven’t ranted much on other issues; so let’s talk about economics!  Yes, that is boring to me, but it is also related to all of the fighting going on elsewhere; since all of the money getting dumped into weapons affects the rest of the economy for all countries involved.  For instance, we’ve seen reports from Israel noting a twenty-percent drop in their overall economy – not a surprise considering the fighting and blockade on Gaza that means that there isn’t any economic activity for more than two million people that previously were busying at least basic needs like food and clothing.  That is going to affect their country for years to come – especially while also adding in new government debt that is inevitable for both the military spending and loss of tax revenues.

While Israel is a micro-example, most military spending elsewhere is also happening through new debts; that means borrowing more money on a big scale; and will lead to future round of inflation that eventually reaches everyone for reasons that can range from resource scarcity to demand-inflation.  If your eyes are glazing over in your now, I apologize, but at the risk of boring you further, history also should teach us that debt cycles like this can and have led to the end of empires; and that can happen either slower or faster than most people can imagine possible.  Most of the ‘western’ countries are on the wrong side of that problem right now, and even economic growth is a fiction when that is entirely-funded by new debt while also being off-set and made worse by inflation.  We wouldn’t have any kind of family business if it had been run the same way as those governments have been running their ‘businesses’ for decades now, and to be blunt; that will only continue to happen until we either run out of weapons or have enough-fewer of them than other countries have so that they no longer need to be afraid of us.

Okay, that’s enough of a rant for tonight – though I could go on; and might do that soon for other topics that annoy me just as much as everything I’ve written about tonight; so don’t be surprised if you have more of the same to read in near-future reports!  For now, though, I’m ready to call it a night and get some sleep; so I’ll set Ethan free to head for his room and do that now!

Until next time, live with love, fellow Magi of the Light!
